The West Potomac Rifle team competes in the Potomac High School Rifle League, an association of high school rifle teams in the Washington Metro area. The team is open to all high school students. Team members complete in air rifle matches.
Rifle is a Winter Sport at West Potomac, with the season running from October to the end of March. Training for each season begins in October, but competitive opportunities are available for individual rifle team members year-round.
Riflery is an NCAA collegiate sport. A number of colleges provide athletic scholarship support for rifle shooters. Many West Potomac Rifle Team graduates have gone on to shoot in college, including the Coast Guard Academy, and the Virginia Tech. Rifle is a major international and Olympic sport.
During the season, the team conducts three position air rifle practice on Monday through Thursday evenings at the West Potomac JROTC Range at the high school at 6500 Quander Road Alexandria, VA 22307, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Each team member is scheduled to attend two practices per week and participate in matches as scheduled. Additionally, there is open practices at the Izaak Walton League in Centreville, Mondays and Friday evenings.
